RE: Undercut Hairstyle: How to, Haircut, Pictures, Products - OFFICIAL thread

I really wish I had 50 posts I have alot of questions that are hard to ask without pics. When getting an undercut, the back top should always be shorter than the front right? I guess it depends on style but how much? I have an under cut and the back is really grown out. Just ask the barber to cut the back length a bit, do the regular fade, and leave everything else untouched?

I think it looks pretty decent, but in my opinion i would go for a more styled way on top, instead of everything just going full up. Maybe let the top grow a bit longer, so you can slick it back, or go for a left or right sided backslick, with some volume.
About the sides: you can actually try any lenght you want. You need regular trimming once a month anyway, because it grows out pretty fast, from this lenght.
Just give it a try, and go shorter... You will be where you at now, within 1 month of growing. It will be wort the experience.

I have sort of a widow's peak, does that make it okay to have an undercut or would it look bad if I go really short on the sides? Also do you think my face structure suits undercut? Should I go with longer hair on the top or short spiked up hair?

If you are worried about your widows peak (which i didnt even recognise at first) you could style it like a side part undercut, so it gets an asymmetrical look and draws the atention away from your hairline.
I wouldnt go shorter on top actually, but what you can do is instead of spiking it UP, try spiking it up but more towards the front. Its hard to describe, and i cant post pictures yet.
But if you google for "short faux hawk" youll see what i men with spiking it upfront.

When I try to do a quiff my hair don't always stay in the place where I want it to be. I applied hair gel and blow dried my hair but didn't get what I wanted. I've wavy hair specially when the length increases they don't remain straight, in the picture they don't look that wavy but now the length at the top reaches the middle of my nose. What pomade/wax should I try for a volumized quiff? Something like blumaan from youtube.

Well, about hair product, gel never worked for me when i had a similiar style. Back in the time when i did my undercut hairstyle up/upfront, or messy, i used Sebastian Craft Clay. This product line was never mentioned in this forum, or i didnt see it here. Its something like a wax. It leaves my hair pretty formable during the day, with medium Hold. I liked it because it was matte, and not so super uberstyled shiny.

My routine, if i remember correctly, was:
After shower, (with or without shampoo) start drying your hair with a towel (untill hair is damp/towel dry), use a medium hold volume Mousse( with heat protect if possible) and blowdry your hair into the direction you DONT want it when its finished and styled ( i wanted my hair to be like parted to the right, so i blowdried to the left, wich gave me more volume in the end) stop with the blowdrying BEFORE your hair is fully dried. Then i used the Clay i mentioned for the finish. As with clay, and other waxes, the less you use, the better it'll work.
I used a small fingertip size, and rubbed it between my hands, untill they get warm.
If you dont have volume problems, skip the Mousse part, and just dry your hair untill its slightli damp. The go on with the clay.

Another point is, when you do your hair, try using product, on damp and on dry hair. This sometimes makes a hughe difference. For me, most hair products mostly work better when applied on damp hair and let it dry by itself, or blowdried.

Well thats what i did, you should just try, and find out

So I have coarse, wavy hair with plenty of volume. Can I pull off an undercut hairstyle? Most undercuts I've seen are on people with finer, straight hair.

If not, any similar alternatives? I like the short sides that go up high.

I just went ahead and create a thread with lots of pictures of Marcel Nguyen's haircut in an Undercut. You will find product recommendations in that epic thread too, but, in essence, below are the hair products for an Undercut like Marcel Nguyen. Click each link to see more.
  • Use the Suavecito pomade for a wet look when styling a side swept or flat hairstyle for your Undercut.
  • Use THIS other pomade for creating a slick and high-shine side swept, slicked back hairstyle or flat hairstyle for your Undercut.
  • Get THIS styling wax if, instead of having your Undercut with a side swept or flat style, you prefer to style a Quiff or otherwise erect/vertical style where you shape your hair up (e.g. like in the Brush Up hairstyle or Blowout).
By the way, for those of you in the UK and wanting to get the hair products in the list above, you can get the wet-effect pomade in THIS link, the high-shine pomade in THIS link and the styling wax in THIS link.

How can I get Justin Timberlake haircut from last year from his TKO music video? What type of comb/product should I use?

Hey guys,

I want to get a kind of hairstyle like this one here:

I have a similar face shape to the guy in the picture. I've had a faux hawk for a year so in progress of growing my hair out. How long do I need to grow the top out to, what about the sides?

Would that even qualify as an undercut? It looks like it has a lot of volume on top and is just styled straight up as opposed to back? How would you style it like in the picture?

Bowl cut difference with the Undercut.
We had another forum member asking about the difference between a bowl haircut and the Undercut so here is the difference and definitions of these two haircuts.

The Undercut and the bowl haircut have a similar goal but are somewhat different. The goal is to disconnect the hair on the top of the head with the hair on the sides and back of the head.

With the Undercut, the disconnected haircut is done by clipping the hair on the sides and back of the head with one single clipper length. The Undercut also makes a very rapid taper at the edges (where the disconnect occurs) so that the edge between the hair on the top of the head and sides/back of the head is not to contrasting.

On the other hand, the bow cut aims for a contrasting disconnect. The hairstyle of the bowl cut is also a form of mop top or fringe hairstyle where the hair is allowed to be at a length where it hangs down under its own weight. Hence the bowl haircut is a classic hairstyle for kids with straight hair and wavy hair, and it was a popular hairstyle in the 1970s to 1990s with children. The length on the top of the head for the bowl cut is a medium length to long length (anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of hair length).

The disconnected haircut has the same contrasting edge between the top of the head and the sides and back of the head. However, the hair is usually cut shorter so it's styled up in a Brush Up hairstyle or messy hairstyle. The disconnected hairstyle is thus a volume hairstyle and one that is very popular presently together with the slicked back hairstyle form for the Undercut.

In summary, the difference between the Undercut and the bowl cut is that the Undercut is a smooth one-length clipper haircut while the bowl cut is a sharp-edge flat hairstyle.

Of course! the buzzed sides and back of the head are the foundation of the undercut haircut. I replied to your hairstyling advice thread with some more ideas of undercut hairstyles. You can have your undercut laying low as in flat, you can have your undercut with a lot of volume like the in the two steps undercut, you can have the awesome slicked back undercut and more hairstyles. Even tousled styles go great with the undercut!

A good tip for the undercut hairstyle is that any mens hairstyles that you see in places like this forum, magazines, out when walking around etc, they're all possible to style with an undercut. I posted some hairstyle ideas in your thread but I will post them here too for you and anyone else reading. They're other great styling threads in the forum that give you a huge range of ideas to consider for your undercut.

Casual hairstyles:

Messy hairstyles, goes great if you have wavy hair especially with the undercut:

What hairstyle is the closest to Undercut hairstyle? I mean something with less difference between length of top and length of sides, but with similar look, in general.

The most similar haircut to the Undercut is the Fade haircut.

A good hairstyle that is similar to the Undercut would be the Fade haircut. Most specifically, I'd recommend the High Fade haircut, which leaves most of your sides and back of the head clipped to zero and to skin.

If you're looking for a similar hairstyle to the Undercut, then go with a Fade haircut. If you're going to be seeing a barber for your fade cut, tell him that you want a fast hair-clipper taper done as a fade and done to skin.

RE: Undercut Hairstyle: How to, Haircut, Pictures, Products - OFFICIAL thread
Hello, I went through this thread but I didn't quite found what I was looking for.

I really love the undercut look. Until now my "hair styling" was always the cycle of growing 2 inches of hair and then "buzzz-ing" it off to 5-15 milimeters. Now, I have about 6 cm of hair on top (which is hopefully enough for this haircut) and I would like to get one.

However, I am a little bit concerned, about how it would look. I think (based on some pics here), my head shapeis quite all right, but I am worried about my hair density.

I have very thick (or dense) straight hair (with a little scumbag-asymetric-"wave", but what the hell, right?) and when I say dense, I'm talking capital "D". When I'm in the shower and I have shampoo on my head, the hair lays nicely in the back, but I can't do that with just water, not to mention when dry. They just stand up. When I make them go front, they lay nicely on my forehead, but I can't get them "go back", and I am worried I won't be able to do it even with a gel or wax - so the undercut would look actually pretty terrible.

What is your advice? Anyone with the similar type of hair? Would it get better when I get to ~4 inches? Also, do the scissors for dense hair actually help?

Thank you for your advices! Smile
