Will definitely be looking into buying all of those products Smile

Cool, buddy, glad I helped. As said, you don't need to buy any mirror, you can cut your hair with some skill without them, just that they make the clipping experience much easier.

You can call me TMHF or tmhf Wink

Yes, especially if you don't have much hair to begin with. A hair dryer will help a lot to get volume so it's great for modern slicked back hair styles or for any other volume styles. Have a look at our men's hair dryer discussion thread to learn more about good hair dryers. A really good one that you can get is this hair dryer, which is a bit pricey but, when it comes to men's styling tools, you get what you pay for so I recommend paying for a good one as otherwise you'll find yourself buying a new one again in a couple of months.

Have a read through Rogelio's awesome hair dryer guide at Manly Curls (click the link to read the guide). Rogelio is the same guy who published The Men's Hair Book and The Curly Hair Book, and those 2 books are worth their weight in gold. The Men's Hair Book also has a guide on how to use a hair dryer BTW (well, the book is full of guides and presents an epic whole hair management system all in itself).

So yeah, read Rogelio's hair dryer guide (it's 2 parts/articles, so a long guide but very much worth its read) and then pick up either of his books if you want to have a solid resource for all about your hair.

That isn't a difficult cut whatsoever mate just grab one of the clippers the guys mentioned above and clip everything you see below the top of the head.
Going by eye i reckon the top is one and a half inches long so you really have 2 lengths to bother with for yoru hair, the actual undercut with a two blade guard and the top with scissors which you yourself could do this haircut.
Easy piece.

As I mentioned earlier, your best bet is this hair dryer guide, it is from men's hair expert Rogelio of ManlyCurls.com and The Men's Hair Book. His guide is really good when it comes to showing you the technique of using a hair dryer and how to style while blow drying the hair.

We are planning putting out our own editorial hair dryer guide, but for now the guide of Rogelio at Manly Curls will help you a lot. If you haven't already, I suggest you also buy his book The Men's Hair Book as he details how to use a hair dryer in the book too, among the epic stuff he covers in the book

Ok this is my attempt to post sum pictures of the undercut. if I got any wrong then please let me know. From the guide in this thread I find it is pretty clear now and my barber already knows the cut but I took some of the pictures in this thread and showed his a couple of the pics to know what he thought about them.

It really is a great hairstyle specially slicked back. I think the slicked back version is the one that looks the best out of all undercuts and it is easy to do with a clipper and a strong holding pomade. Especially for straight hair because from what I can see with curls the edges are too *thick* as in the stick out? don't look that good imo. All from pinterest, sorry if there are any repeats!

1st one is Michael Pitt as Jimmy Darmody from Boardwalk Empire Big Grin

James you got them all right expect for this one above. The one from Jimmy Darmody with the side view helps a lot to really see the line of demarcation (aka perimeter or edge) of the haircut!

That is correct buddy!

The 2 Step Undercut is the name that we created in this forum as it is a translation from the Spanish "doble escalon" which Rogelio (from The Men's Hair Book) mentioned is the name some barbers call it in Spanish-speaking countries. Other barbers may call it something else but that's the name we gave it and if you show your barber that picture he will know exactly what it is that you want Smile

Any idea which hair product Oliver Giroud uses?
His hair stays in place with a matte effect.

I'm thinking of buying Suavecito pomade, but I'm worried that it'll give me too much shine (I'm rocking the Beckham undercut).

We have actually created an epic hairstyle guide for Olivier Giroud with his haircuts and undercut hair style + product recommendations. Suavecito is actually more like a low-shine & matte pomade - click here to see it & a great source to get it from - so the effect it gives is a wet effect - no shine. The one that gives some shine & is still a water soluble pomade - so is easy to wash - is the Layrite Super Hold Deluxe pomade - click link for my review in this forum!

For a matte effect, the best is a hair wax & specifically is this one from Tigi which I also recommend in our hairstyle and haircut guide for Olivier Giroud! That wax is great for 'updo' styles including messy styles & brush up styles like he does with all his undercuts.

I feel like I have very thick hair, and therefore i can't do the lighter looking side swept messy undercut because of the bulk. Is using thinning shears at the barbershop the only way to help this? I heard that thinning shears cause shorter hairs to uplift longer hairs from the root. Is this true?

A newer type of undercut that we have discussed a lot in this forum & that we also named in this forum is the 2 Step undercut hairstyle. It is like a regular undercut but it also has an extra 'step' or layer that acts like a buffer for better aesthetics of the haircut when it comes to doing it on thick hair or curly hair.
We have talked about this type of under cut in this thread already but since this is the most popular guide on the internet for the undercut, then it is always a good idea to also provide alternatives to the regular version of the cut Smile

Pictures of 2-Step undercut hairstyle
Done in long hair with a modern slick back. It actually looks really cool with the modern version of the slick back!

It depends on what you want to achieve as your final style although I think thinning hair with shears is a waste of hair length. Thinning the hair will create uneven lengths which will be a mess to even out if you want to grow your hair longer. Maybe if you just want short hair or medium to short hair... maybe then using thinning shears is useful. However my advice is to learn to adapt your hair type & density - which is what you probably mean by 'thick hair'.
Read this discussion on short haircuts for thick hair. The advice is to remove bulk from the sides and back of the head while learning to style the top.

Fwiw thick hair is better than thin hair for hairstyling & that is not just my opinion. Thick hair looks better when styled good, much more volume, easier to hold the hairstyle up, less problem with hair weighing down & 'deflating' etc - have a look at that discussion before you go in & let the thinning shears close to your mane.

RE: Undercut Hairstyle: How to, Haircut, Pictures, Products - OFFICIAL thread
Hey guys, I'm really looking to make an undercut type hairstyle work for me, but to be honest, I'm not sure I even have the facial structure for it or not, so first thing's first, I'd like to get some input on if I have what would look to be the face for an undercut.

Front:

If so, I was wondering what would be the best way to go about getting it cut next time I make a trip, as well as the best way for me to style it. I know there are tons of different undercuts as displayed so well in this thread, but I'm also curious to know if there would be one or the other that would work best with my head/hair. The following are some extra pics of the left, and right sides of my hair as it is now.

Hi guys! I just got this haircut and I'm having trouble styling my hair! My hair is super thick and wavy and whenever I try to style it to the side or back, the front of my hair just poofs up! So do I need to straighten it or is there anything else I can do? The hair on top is pretty long when I stretch it out straight. I would post a picture but I'm new and I don't know if I even can yet! Thanks guys!

I have the same type of hair. Are you using pomade? Mine did this for a while, but once it grows longer (4+ inches, preferably 5 or 6) it will lay back better. Right now I am using Murray's pomade, but I may switch to a water soluble such as Suavecito. Mine usually forms a pompadour naturally since it is so thick, unless I use a lot of product. I would post pics, but I am new as well.

I think it's the same issue of the hair length like Dan posted too. If you have thick hair or a lot of hair your hair will poof up if it is short. I know that because it happens to me too.
Try to grow some more length, like shoot for a minimum length of four inches of hair. Ditto for the use of a good pomade like Dan mentioned too.

If you need some some good recommendations for slicking hair in the undercut, then check out this thread with recommended hair products. There recommended pomades in that thread are excellent for slicking the undercut. Got a couple tubs of them all myself lol since you can use those pomades for more than just undercuts or slicked back hairstyles. Pompadours, side combing, even quiffs!

You may need some extra length as men with very thick hair will have their hair stick up until they hit certain lengths, usually it's 4 inches for super thick hair. I'm pretty sure that this is your case since redhead men have the thickest hair strands by nature (I am guessing you're a redheaded male from your username). A common complain among redhead males is that their hair tends to grow out, even if it's straight and not curly. Having thick hair is not bad though, all it means is that you will need strong hold hair products to style your thick locks.

Without a doubt, for slicking your undercut or for doing flat side parts (i.e. side swept styles), use this water based pomade, which has a very-strong hold with medium-high shine and which is easy to wash (as opposed to the oil-based pomades which have the same super strong hold!).

On another note, guys, since we are covering the hairstyles of the 2014 World Cup, I am posting below some more 2014 undercut hairstyles of football players in this World Cup, which we have been posting at our official 2014 World Cup thread. The men below with the undercuts are Olivier Giroud, Toby Alderweireld, Sergio Kun Aguero, Mathieu Debuchy and Jose Maria Gimenez.
