What hairstyle is the closest to Undercut hairstyle? I mean something with less difference between length of top and length of sides, but with similar look, in general.

Regular taper haircut done with a hair clipper, top left with 2 inches of length. Side swept hairstyle on the top styled with a good comb and a pomade.

As classic as it gets.

Just wondering if the undercut is suitable for all head shapes? Or is it a haircut that makes certain head shapes look better?

It should work on all face shapes. I think you just have to alter how extreme the undercut is depending on your face shape.

RE: Undercut Hairstyle: How to, Haircut, Pictures, Products - OFFICIAL thread
Hi guys,

What would I tell my barber or hairstylist if I wanted this type of undercut?

Basically I have quite a bit of hair at the top and short-medium on the sides and I want the sides to be shaven but with hair falling over the top of it..

I have asian hair, so if I shaved the sides (high fade) it sticks out. I like the side hair to be flat, and the undercut is the only style I can think of..

Or should I just bite the bullet and do a low #2 (just above the ears) on the sides and back? I love the length on top, and don't want them to cut it haha.

Mod edit: read the rules about embedding images. Next time it's a ban.

That's a 2-step Undercut.

It's the same haircut of Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners (movie).

Smile RE: Undercut Hairstyle: How to, Haircut, Pictures, Products - OFFICIAL thread
I'm also rocking the undercut, but I have a few questions.
You can compare my hairstyle to David Beckham's hairstyle.

I would post pictures of the Beckham hairstyle, but I can't because it says I need a minimum post count of 50.
When you type in "david beckham hair" on google, you'll see what I mean Smile.

The problem is that I can't find the right product to suit my needs.
I've used a lot of different (must say that I didn't use the A-Brands) products already. I honestly don't think American Crew Fiber or whatever would do a better job then my current product.
I see you guys recommend pomade a lot but I would like to have a strong hold with a low shine. So pomade isn't really an option.
My hair is quite thin & it "grows forward" (it's also straight), which makes it quite hard to model it the way I want it (sideways/backward)
Usually I just wash it (/make it wet), towel dry it a bit & then use my blowdryer to get it somewhat in the shape that I want it to be. (See the picture links I've posted for the shape)
After that I use Axe Gel Cream, which is decent, but not the best product for my hairstyle.
It keeps my hair a bit in place, but it doesn't do the job I want it to do.
I also use Syoss hairspray, but it doesn't really strenghten my hair.
I could make a few pictures of my hairstyle, but since Beckhams hair is almost identical to mine, I see no direct need in that. When I go to the barber I get my sides at 6mm, the top is around 10-15 cm at this time.

I hope you guys can help me out!

You don't need to search for David Beckham hair on Google as we have it all here on this forum. The men's hair field is riddled with spam (websites that steal content and post 2 lines of generic useless text) or with sites that have no clue about male grooming and who hire non hair professionals as editors. If you want to find the best information on men's hairstyles, then search this forum, including learning about David Beckham's hairstyles (see the link).

We are still a young community and growing every day, so more and more guides and tutorials on everything about hair types, hairstyles, haircuts, grooming, shaving and more are coming out, including Jurgen's Slicked Back Undercut guide which he published yesterday and which is the hairstyle that you are alluding to. He references David Beckham in the guide and posts plenty of pictures of close-ups of his hair. You aren't going to get any better than that guide he posted.

You can use wax instead of pomade. Wax is more suitable for defined volume styles (think quiffs or brush ups) or messy styles with sharp looks, but you can certainly use wax for a slick back if you're not happy with the hold of the pomades you've tried. The TIGI pomade has a matte finish and a good hold and a clean look, plus it washes off easy too, so consider that wax as a next product to try.

You may also look into strong hold pomades that are water based as the oil based require daily shampooing. This water pomade has a very strong hold which is works well for holding your hair as per your requirements.

Lastly, you can also look into said oldschool (oil) pomades that give a solid hold but that are a bit of a pain to remove and will have you shampooing daily, in case you care to follow the No Shampoo method of Rogelio in The Men's Hair Book (many of us follow it and daily use of oil based pomades doesn't help). This one from Layrite is the original formula but is easier to wash off than the classic pomades so it's a good option to consider too.

hi guys, stumbled upon this site, very helpful tips!

You guys recommend all these clippers etc but I have 0 experience with cutting my own hair I've never even done it before, I don't want to end up with a #1 and a #2 on scattered in patches all over my sides :/

are those clippers fool proof in that if you put it to a certain setting you can't possibly cut it any further/thinner then what it's set at? so that i can go over the area to make sure its all even?

Yes, although not all hair clippers will guarantee a precise trimming according to the length you choose. Usually the cheap/low-quality clippers don't clip precisely because of the motor used which is very erratic when it comes to catching and slicing the hair hafts.

If you want a high-quality hair clipper that will give you the most precise clipping and that will last you years, then you cannot wrong with this cordless clipper from Andis (it comes with the full set as well as a full blade range; it's all you need in one product) or this corded clipper from Oster (for the Oster clipper do also get the extra guard blade set). These are the 2 hair clippers that we highly recommend in this forum when it comes to cordless and corded clippers, and you will not go wrong with either of these two clippers as they are long term investments and precise machines Smile

RE: Undercut Hairstyle: How to, Haircut, Pictures, Products - OFFICIAL thread
Hello, I want your help.
I grow up my top hair for a year and I have the undercut hairstyle. The last two months I grow up my top side hair because without them, the result it wasn't too good. In this area the shape of my skull don't help me.
I divide my top hair at two gears. The front top are at 6-7 inches and the back top are 4-5 inches.

I want when I style them to have the result of all my hair back but with separate(almost like the video).

When I use hairstyle products, the result has not any separations and all my hair are back like a helmet.
I have tried products like

1.Baxter of California hard cream pomade
2.American Crew Grooming Cream
3.Hairbond Moulder
4.Gold digger by Vilain
5.Wella Go matt clay
6.Wella Bold move matte styling paste

The most products of them(except 1 and 6) are like glue when they contact with my hair. I don't want high shine. Iprefer matte or low shine

The best result in my hair, I managed when I don't use any hairstyle product and after 5 days of the last wash with shampoo(I have a little separations and my hair aren't too heavy).
I try to manage a similar result with a product. Maybe my hair need cut?

The video presents asymmetrical undercut and I noticed that with this cut, we manage separations. Am I right? But I am afraid to cut my hair

Do you have to suggest me something? Products and cut(asymmetrical is the solution or not)? Maybe the way I use the products

I want to add that my hair are wavy for that reason I blow dry to give them more sense of straight.
All produts that I used, I used them in dry hair.

PS1. Due to rules, I can not post photo and video. Please copy paste the links to watch them
PS2. Sorry for my English

Cutting your own hair takes some experience, especially if using scissors. With hair clippers, it is very easy to clip your own hair, especially when doing Undercuts and other sharp edge haircuts like the High and Tight and the Recon. Now, if you want to do a fade, then you will need to work on it until you get the experience, but then fades aren't the kind of cut you should be giving yourself, at least at first.

Those two hair clippers are among the best you can buy and they are very precise for clipping lengths. They are very useful for the Undercut since all you have to do is clip in your preferred blade/guard (say a #2) and clip everything on the sides and back without changing the guard. They are also great for fade maintenance so you don't have to go as often to the barbershop and they are also great for having short hair on the top of the head and for trimming your sideburns and even rest of facial hair.

Good question, Kent. We have covered this issue in other forum threads but essentially, you have 3 options:
  • Use your own mirror: the Undercut is an easy cut anyway. Jut clip everything below the horizontal line of your temples. Keep an eye on the mirror an eventually you will get to a blind spot, and this is where you risk screwing up your Undercut. However, with good practice, you'll be able to clip the blind spot too.
    |
  • A three panel mirror: this type of mirror is pretty good for any facial grooming (shaving, beard styling, stubble designing etc), and, of course, hairstyling! With this three-panel mirror (see it in the link), you adjust the angle so that you can see the blind spot easily and buzz it correctly. If you like this three panel mirror, then think about how much it will help you with other hairstyles and shaving, plus the mirror has magnifying option to see your hair/face closer! Lots of women have this mirror for their complicated hairstyles and what not' so, if it works for women, I can assure you it will work for us dudes Wink (plus quite a few of us have these mirrors too)
    |
  • Use a expandable mirror: you simply attach this mirror to the wall so that it is close to your main mirror. The when clipping your hair, simply adjust the expandable panel (it stretches a lot!) and use it to "mirror" the main mirror, so essentially you have a mirror in front of your (main mirror) and then behind you, you have the expandable mirror to stretch and adjust as you clip your hair. This expandable mirror works great for the task.

/Start of mini rant/

Listen guys, this forum was created to cut the BS and crap that surrounds the men's hairstyling field in both the online environment and the offline environment.

Our ethos is to provide the right information to our forum members, so here we can easily talk about curling irons while we also post cool cornrows pictures and then proceed to talk about the men's hairstyles trends for 2014. Be different, think and ask (as you guys are doing in this discussion tread) because men who browse online to try to learn about their hair care and hairstyles are flooded with crap and get confused. We cut that BS and give you the right facts.

/Rant over/

Kent, those are the 3 options you have for clipping your hair fully. The main product here, however, is a good hair clipper like any of the 2 hair clippers I mentioned above (Andis or Oster), and then, if it fits your budget, throw in any of the two mirrors I linked above.

Guys, think of this as investing in your future. You are learning in this forum the right way to look after your hair and style it correctly. Once you have the right tools (clipper, hair dryers and good styling products) then you are set for life. Having a hair clipper is almost a must for anyone wanting to really expand their range of hairstyles for men Smile

Any questions? Ask.
