I just recently discovered this man Bun, and i kinda like the idea.
Too bad i'll probably never be able to grow a Beard like this.
Still, i need about 2 more inches untill i could do a bun, and i will definitly gonna try it out!

I'm a 17 years old Asian and I don't have any obvious facial hair yet (from a normal distance, I am basically 'clean shaven' haha). My question is if I want to rock this hairstyle, will it look feminine on me? I see that most of the guys rocking a man bun have a beard to complement it. I believe I have an oval shape.

Devran Taskesen hair

Devran Taskesen is a male model who also has long hair and wears a man bun. I didn't know whom he was until a new forum member mentioned him. We have actually posted pictures of him featuring his beard styles and long mane, but I wasn't aware of his name (the same way that I am not aware of many upcoming hipster male models. They seem to be sprouting from under the rocks LOL).

I'm very interested in growing this hairstyle, and I've been growing my hair for a while, however my hair very thick and I believe it would be considered a bit wavy. My only issue is I'm probably barely around 3 inches on top and a good amount less on my sides and people. What could I do with my hair in the meantime?

I also have a hipster beard. I just measured my extended hair and my top is just over 2.5 inches. The sides are in the short category.

You need much longer hair as 3 inches on the top isn't enough to even reach the crown from the forelock. The hair length needed for your man bun will depend on whether you want a full man bun or a man bun Undercut or topknot.

Full man bun:

This is the manbun style in which all your scalp hair (i.e. all the hair on your head) is tied into the bun. To get a full man bun, you will need at least 10 inches, although 12 inches is better.

Man bun Undercut or top knot:

With the man bun Undercut, you will only be tying the hair on the top of your head as the sides and back will be done in an Undercut haircut. The minimum hair length for the manbun Undercut is 6 inches, although we recommend to grow the hair a little bit more to 8 inches. Same goes for the topknot.

The problem with the minimum lengths for the man bun (whether a full bun or an Undercut bun) is that they are the shortest lengths needed to tie a bun by pulling and tying it tightly. Traction alopecia is a real risk with man buns and while you need to wear a tight bun 24/7 for months on end, it's an issue that is there and that is even more important to avoid in men who are beginning to bald, as a tight bun will accelerate the loss of hair around the hairline.

Since you have 3 inches of hair length currently, you still have about 6 months of waiting to do to get to 6 inches of hair length. The average hair growth rate for an adult male is half an inch per month, although this can vary depending on diet, thyroid output, cortisol levels and disease.

Make sure to optimize your nutrition and add in some vitamin and minerals if your diet isn't very good. Most men walk around with a slower hair growth rate than their genes allow due to bad nutrition habits. Optimizing your intake of hair-friendly vitamins like vitamin A and C and minerals like zinc as well as omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oil or cod liver oil) can increase your hair growth and get you stronger hair strands. This is indeed a plausible road to take if you wan to grow enough hair length for a man bun as fast as possible!

Not at all. We're still seeing the man bun hairstyle rocking solidly in our hair salons. The man bun is just another styling option for long hair; bear that in mind since long-haired males have the option of wearing a man bun any day of the week or change their man-bunning frequency. It's the numerical growth of long-haired male individuals in all these years that has kept the man bun as a go-to trendy hairstyling option for the many years ahead (and the many years in the past too; long before the man bun became popular circa 2013).

Yes, still trendy although obviously not at its peak of 2013/2014.
Our barbershop is mainly black male focused and we are still seeing a good amount of black guys with man buns which means that these same black folks are still wearing long hair. Before the man bun trend you could count with one hand the number of black folks with long hair. And then it was dreadlocks or cornrows.

I think that this forum has helped a lot with changing the opinion of long hair on black guys as many of our clients have referenced this forum at some point in these last years. Getting off topic though but I don't think that the man bun hairstyle is going to wither away any time soon.
