Middle aged guy wants long hair

I'm 53, have pretty thick hair still. It is receding some on the forehead area. I've actually cut my hair for the last 20 years. For my age people say my hair is nice, but they never see me when I wake up! It's a complete eat up looking mess. I use about a marble or two of hair gel to keep it under control. Without the gel my hair is frizzy and terrible looking.

I've always wanted longer hair but many say I'm too old to sport such a look... And maybe I am, but I know the shorter my hair is , the worse I look. I don't have model chin lines or probably would look terrible bald.

How do I get there? Should I do it at all? I'm still young at heart and in pretty good shaping hitting the gym a lot.

Any help would be appreciated. I can't seem to find any help around my area.
