[Slickback] How do I reduce volume? Why don't I look like Jake Gyllenhaal

I followed advice given in two threads on this forum. (<50 posts can't post links.)

However my hair comes out very "tall". Too tall and puffy. I *think* it would look better if my hair was a lot flatter like Jake Gyllenhaal's hair. Looking at his other hairstyles, he doesn't really have any volume.


As you can see. The top part sits very unnatural on top of my head. It looks very weird to me from the side.

I have an oil based pomade I found online and a water based one I picked up from a barber. I've tried both and they don't feel much different to me. Maybe I'm just a noob, idk. But the hair won't lay down even it it's WET!
I do find it surprising how incredibly easy it was to lay it back though. I was told by my barber that my hair was too thick, too stiff and too short to pull it off and it stay up. But it doesn't. Does this mean I have room to thin out the hair on thop? To get rid of volume?

Dang. I thought I could work around it by uploading pics. How can I make this happen? I'm not going to spam your nice website with 50 posts just so I can properly ask for advice.

I also need someone to advise how to go against 99% of the world's grain and get a product for LESS volume...?
