The Pompadour hairstyle usually incorporates the slicking of the hair back. In this Pompadour hairstyle picture, the hair on the sides and back of the head is tapered with a hair clipper. Thus, the only hair to style as a Pompadour is the hair on the top.

The old-school Pompadours such as those of the Rockabilly hairstyles had a smooth back slicking of the sides, which effectively acted as if the hair was clipped. As the hair was slicked back, it would usually meet at the back of the head in what's known as a duck's tail. The taper haircut with hair clipper was used for other men's haircuts at the time, but not for Pompadours.
