How to get Matthew McConaughey's hairstyle

I'd like to style my hair just like Matthew's when my hair grows out, but I find it difficult to do that. My hair is kind of like his, curly/wavy (more towards curly). Haven't really figured out whether his hair is curly or more like a wavy type. (different every time)

When I wet my hair and ad gel-wax to it, it curls up. I want it to lay back and to be more wavy just like Matthew's. I can't seem to make it work. So what's the problem? is it the amount of water?, the product, or just because my hair is a little curlier than his.

Here are a few pictures of his style, just like I want it. His hair is wavy on the top and curly on the back and towards the neck.







P.S. I have another thread running (in harstyles and haircuts), that will be my next haircut, but this thread is for a haircut that I would like in the future, after I grow it out again.
