Tousled hair and messy hairstyle tips for long term care
The best tousled hairstyle has the appearance of an easy wash-and-wear style, with loose curls or waves and plenty of volume and bounce. The reality is that achieving and maintaining this look takes just a bit of effort. However, when done right, it is so worth it. With a little time and effort, you can have this contemporary casual look and some some tousled locks!

Follow these hair care and hairstyle tips to achieve and care for your perfect tousled hair style.

Get a Good Hair Cut:

The best tousled hair results from a great cut. Go to a professional for your cut and be sure to take a photo of the style you hope to achieve. The right cut will take full advantage of your hair's attributes, including its natural waves (if any), texture and shape.

From my experience hairstylists are better at giving modern haircuts for men. You will want a modern textured haircut for the tousled look, so do consider visiting a hairstylist instead of a barber, although there are also some good barbers who can cut modern haircuts. Just that there are more hairstylists who can do this than barbers.

Start with Clean Hair:

Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo, like Paul Mitchell Thickening Shampoo or Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Shampoo. If you use a conditioner (perhaps Paul Mitchell Thickening conditioner or Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Conditioner) after you shampoo, don't overdo it. Keep it light and minimize the amount that you work through your hair. Always use cool water to rinse your hair.

Use Styling Gel or Mousse to Give Your Tousled Hair Body and Hold:

While your hair is still wet, work a small amount of styling gel or mousse (like Herbal Essences Volumizing Mousse or Weightless Volumizing Gel) through it from the roots to the ends. Start with just a dab. You can add more as you dry your hair as needed.

Some good products for styling the tousled look include Aussie Catch The Wave mousse and leave in conditioner, Herbal Essences Volumizing Mousse and Herbal Essences Weightless Volumizing Gel.

Dry with Care:

If possible, air dry your hair and only style with your fingers by tousling the hair with them. If you have long hair that is either wavy or coiled curly, then scrunch it periodically to accentuate its natural waves or coils. If you must use a hair dryer, use a cool temperature or low heat setting and low volume. As you blow dry your hair, use your fingers to tousle the hair as you would if air drying so as to get the most out of its natural wave.

If you have straight hair and want a wavy tousled look, you'll need to use a curling iron or curlers to form the waves and curls that are key to tousled hair. If you use a curling iron, section your hair, then wrap the full length of each section around a mid-sized curling iron. Hold briefly, then release. Do this with all sections. When you are done, loosen and style the curls and waves with your fingers. Don't use a comb or brush, which can be counterproductive to creating the casual, tousled hair look you want. If your hair doesn't have as much curl as you'd like after using the curling iron once, repeat the curling process again.

An alternative to using a curling iron is to use large or medium barrel curlers to create full waves and curls. Use low heat and, once your remove the curlers, style your hair with your fingers, not a comb or brush.

Keep Styling Products on Hand:

To care for tousled hair, always keep styling gel or mousse on hand to use when your style begins to lose its bounce and needs to be refreshed. Just apply a little, work it through your hair, then scrunch (if you have wavy or coiled hair) and finger style for a quick pick me up.

Hair Spray Is Another Useful Tousled Hair Care Tool:

Another useful maintenance aid for the tousled hair look is hair spray. However, keep it light so that it doesn't weigh down your hair. Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.
