SS Haircut and Nazi Hairstyle Guide with Rare Hair Pictures
We've had a thread asking about the so-called SS haircut or Nazi hairstyle. This particular hairstyle name is what's inferred to be the slicked back Undercut.

Now, the slicked back Undercut is a great hairstyle that gives any male a timeless gentleman's look. Because of the Undercut haircut, the slicked back hair is emphasized strongly, much more so than in the slicked back style with a taper haircut. However, the SS or the Nazi military didn't just have Undercut haircuts, unlike the belief going on around claims.

The SS, in part also known as the SS-Waffen, as well as just about any Nazi military male in the Second World War would wear an extensive range of hairstyles, and not just the slicked back Undercut.

So as to clear up any confusion, I've decided to create this guide with published images of actual SS and Nazi German soldiers during the Second World War (or during Adolf Hitler's regime) so as to show you the variety of hairstyles of these men. One good reason for this is due to the fact that you will confuse your barber (a lot!) by using arbitrary hairstyle names like the SS hairstyle or Nazi haircut. Some of the barbers in this forum and I have heard these haircut names being asked at barbershops, so I'd rather we have these haircuts discussed here correctly.

Slicked back mid-contour hairstyle:

Aside from the Undercut, the mid contour haircut was a popular one in Nazi Germany. Back then, the mid contour haircut was a military haircut and was known as a Regulation Cut.

Nowadays, the mid contour cut has been revived by hipsters as their chosen haircut to go with their beards and facial hair. Prior to the mid contour haircut, it was the Undercut that was most popular with worldwide hipster males.

Middle part Undercut hairstyle:

The cool thing about the Undercut haircut is that it provides plenty of hair styling options on the top of the head. You can slick your hair back, tousle it or even part it on the middle, like in the picture below of a Nazi military official's hairstyle.

Middle part with mid contour haircut:

Just like with the Undercut, men in Nazi Germany would get a middle parted hairstyle to go with their mid contour haircut. In fact, this particular look was quite popular with Nazi officials, as shown below in this picture of Nazi official Heinz von Westernhagen.

Here's another list of common Nazi men's hairstyles during the Second World War.
Let's continue with this guide and the rest of hairstyles for men during the Nazi Germany era.

Undershave:

An Undercut is usually buzzed with a hair clipper. The hair clipper length used in an Undercut is very low, leaving the hair looking like stubble all the way to one third of an inch. The Undercut can be buzzed high, but, for the best aesthetic results, you need to buzz an Undercut with a very short hair clipper length.

Another variant of the Undercut is the shaved Undercut which is also known as the Undershave. As you can imagine from the Undershave's hairstyle name, the hair on the sides and back of the head is shaved instead of being buzzed.

While the Undershave is not a common haircut for men, it is still used nowadays and was used back then in Nazi Germany. However, German soldiers during the Second World War would use straight razors, also known as cut-throat razors, to shave their Undershave styles. This required plenty of precision as the hair follicle density on the scalp is much higher than that of the face.

Side Swept taper cut hairstyle:

The Side Swept with a taper haircut is a classic look that was popular from the 1920s till the 1960s. An example of the Side Swept with a taper cut is the Gatsby hairstyle which was used in The Great Gatsby movies starring Robert Redford (1974) and Leonardo DiCaprio (2013). The Great Gatsby movie was based in the 1930s, and it illustrated how the Side Swept was a very popular hairstyle for men.

Just as the taper-cut Side Swept was popular in the United States during the 1930s, it too was popular among Nazi Germans.

Side Swept Undercut hairstyle:

The Side Swept Undercut hairstyle was popular in Nazi Germany, and Adolf Hitler wore a Side Swept Undercut for some time while in power. A less common hairstyle for Nazi military males was the Side Swept Undershave although it was still used, even by high-ranking Nazi officials like Heinrich Himmler as illustrated in the picture below.

Businessmen haircut:

The Businessmen haircut is a taper haircut with a side part. The barber name for this hairstyle is indeed a businessmen haircut, but it probably had another name in German back in the 1930s and 1940s during the Nazi regime.

You can go through our Businessmen haircut guide to learn more about both the taper haircut and the side part, which all in all are combined in what we also called the "classic hairstyle". The level of flatness in the Businessmen haircut can vary depending on one's own personal preference (as seen in the two pictures below).

Middle part hair with taper haircut:

Another Nazi haircut for the middle part hairstyle was the short taper haircut as seen below in this hairstyle picture of Manfred Von Richhoven, also known as The Red Baron.

Shaved head or cropped hair:

Unlike men in the United States at the time, German Nazi males would shave their head and/or keep it extremely short when balding, whether old or not-so old. In the United States, however, balding men would try to hide their male pattern baldness by using the mythical Combover hairstyle (that's right, the Combover wasn't invented by Donald Trump!).

Combover hairstyle:

While men in the United States were using the Combover hairstyle to hide their baldness, men in Nazi Germany would use the Combover to accentuate their manes! Thus, just like with the Businessmen hairstyle, the Combover hairstyle was popular with Nazi male officials.

Side part Undercut hairstyle:

Instead of using a taper haircut for the back and sides of the head in the side part hairstyle, the Undercut was also used by Nazi military males to give their side part styles an even length on the sides and back of their heads.

The hairstyles of Adolf Hitler included the Side Swept Undercut and the taper cut.
Lastly, let's go through Adolf Hitler's hairstyles.

The hairstyles of Adolf Hitler:

Adolf Hitler sported a Side Swept hairstyle with a mid contour haircut for much of his time in power. However, he did experiment with the the Side Swept taper haircut and the Side Swept Undershave as per Heinrich Himmler's hairstyle.

Here's a collection of photographs of Adolf Hitler's hairstyles over the years. Some of the photographs are prior to his period in power of Nazi Germany. No matter what his haircut was, one thing that Hitler adhered to over the years was to the sweeping of his hair flat with pomade (made from oil and not boar fat as per many of the pomades at the time as Hitler was an animal lover).

Incidentally, we've also heard of the "Hitler youth hairstyle" name being mentioned to refer to the Side Swept Undercut.
