Need to figure out where to go now.

Need to figure out where to go now.
Folks, I am looking to change my hairstyle. and think of doing a drastic change.
My lifestyle is causing too much grief with the current length. I have a full time job - just like the rest of us, responsible people. However, I also own a photography business, and an avid gymoholic.
that said, Between gym, full time job and photoshoots I have no time to maintain it, and i think i'm starting to pay the price.

In last couple of months, I am pulling a LOT of hair every wash (60 second test fails miserably). then, a whole lot after the wash when brushing.

here is what I have to work with (very long hair, with sides balding):
<can't insert due to forum's overzealous protection>
Any help is appreciated.

To add; combovers, and classic "bible boy" stuff is out of question. While I need to be able to be presentable in the office, I want to have a "rebel" type of approach. I do not want, nor can I afford, to have the "good guy" look. I need to yield an aggressive appearance. While at my size it isn't hard as is, I like to play it safe in the venues I shoot at.

I've contemplated the look of Ragnar (menshairforum.com/talk/Thread-Hairstyle-guide-for-Ragnar-Lothbrok-hair), but I don't think it'll work with my facial features as I have a longer face.

Truthfully, if the conclusion is that I should go short hair is achieved, I'll go that route.

any help is appreicated.

I've enabled the embedding of images for you, so feel free to post any pictures of yours. Use imgur.com as they don't require any registration to post and embed pics you upload there.

By balding sides, are you talking about the hair on the sides of your head balding? Or did you mean that you have shave sides like in the Ragnar Lothbrok hairstyle.

RE: Need to figure out where to go now.
I appreciate the exception.

ultimately, I would love me the Ragnar haircut (I fit the origin and size), but my lady hinted that I'll have to relocate to couch for a while, and my manager hinted at something related to pink slips if I do that. Smile So yes, that's me losing my hair. Sad Ultimate widows peak, if you will

here is what I work with:

RE: Need to figure out where to go now.
Hi Foques!

Ok, let's go by parts. I think your hair in that hairstyle looks pretty cool. I usually am not a fan of long hair in that not many men can pull the look, but you seem to be doing well with it. I think the ponytail hairstyle looks neat and it is, without a doubt, the hairstyle to wear for a professional job as yours is. You may want to look into the man bun for your job as it allows you to cut the visual length of the tail without having to cut the actual ponytail! Smile

Even when long hair doesn't suit a guy, I am still careful with recommending to cut it. Long hair usually carries memories and a meaning to those who have it, so cutting it should only be done when one is ready and if one really wants to. Never allow anyone to force you to cut it down or think that you will look better with X hairstyle! I know plenty of cases of guys cutting their hair because they'd look better with an Undercut or Brush up hairstyle, only to find that they do not!

If you can post a picture of your hair loose, then we could get a better idea of how your current length is working for you. Is your hair at a same length or is it cut in some kind of layered style? Ultimately, you could cut some length at the front so that the hair is at about chin level, and it levels down across the head (in a side-shot view).

About the hair loss with long hair. I don't know if you have read The Men's Hair Book (book is in the link, it is unrelated to this forum but we highly recommend it), but the author, who too has long hair, mentions that spotting more hair when the hair is long is very common. Because the hair is longer, it means that it is more visible so you will seem to be spotting more hairs when your hair is long than when short, when in reality you are shedding the same amount of hairs! This is very common with long hair first-timers, is this your first time with long hair?

Now, the somewhat bad news. There seems to be some temple hair recession on your head and it looks like it is male pattern baldness (aka MPB). I hope it isn't, but the recession is somewhat deep so you really want to check with a hair loss specialist if the receding of your hairline worries you. I am posting below for you the stage classification for MPB, in your case, you would be between a Norwood II and Norwood III.

If you want to know more about hair loss, then you can also check and post in our hair loss section.

Have you noticed your hairline receding? An easy way to check this out (which is also mentioned in The Men's Hair Book) is to go back to pictures of you when you were 18 and compare your hairline with your current hairline, does it look similar or can you see the hairline recession in your current pictures from the hairline you had at 18?

Some men do have a naturally-receded hairline and you seem to have a high density of hair, so you currently are doing pretty well. However, your mentioning of spotting more shed hairs and not doing well with the 60 second test is a bit worrisome, to be honest. Some guys don't take it too well when they are told that they may be going bald, but as you know from our forum, we are pretty straight to the point but always with good intentions Smile If you compare pictures and also tell us your age and if you happen to have any bald males in either side of your family, then that could help some more in helping us pinpoint if MPB is currently at play.

If you're worried about hair loss, you can go on minoxidil (the one in this link is Rogaine and we highly recommend it) or at least test the minoxidil/Rogaine. Rogaine is the flagship minoxidil product in the industry and worth the purchase. The only thing is that minoxidil/Rogaine works its best on the vertex area (the crown area) but it is worth the try for your temples. Also, make sure to check your vertex area as the long hair may be hiding any minor thinning that may be occurring presently (this is very common with long hair so watch out). Vertex thinning is very common in the Norwood III stage.

I hope this has helped and get back to us with more information, including shots with your hair loose. I think your current look looks pretty good, but, if you want to cut your hair and maintain a rebel look, then I would vouch for a medium length of 4 inches and a Pompadour with a 2 Step Undercut or similar hairstyle, no doubts! Smile

RE: Need to figure out where to go now.
wowza. lots of good info here! thank you!

Sorry about the delayed reply... work has been a wee nuts.

I appreciate the warm words on the style; I do not keep my pony tail utterly long, so bun is not needed. Reason I started looking into doing something is due to excessive hair loss I begun noticing a couple of weeks prior to my post.

i'm sure undercut will not work for me.. Brush up.. oh dear. Bieber has it. that right there is akin to tinny little "hittler" mustache in my book. Big Grin

My hair is cut to be the same length, no fancy cutting.

Yes, the recession you are pointing out is what had me concerned; I did pull up the old pictures are you've suggested and did note that my current state doesn't look all that different from the one I had years ago; i'm one of those freaks with freakishly large forehead. that said, I am tempted to try out the shampoo you'd mentioned.
Your Norwood assessment is 100% spot on.

I am absolutely in love with the 2step undercut / Ragnar Lothbrook hair style.. but woman does not approve Sad And you know how this goes.. happy wife=happy life type thing here.

I will try to get a hair down shot - I barely ever have them down.

After reading this forum..somewhat OCD-ishly, I started brushing my hair differently, and using shampoos differently, which drastically decreased the amount of hair I am currently shedding.

I also wonder if this could have been related to a supplement I was taking; I switched to a different product, and added new amino-acids/oils to my diet 3 weeks ago, and things seem to be doing better.

By the by, I am 28.
