Mens Hairstyles and Hair Products – Official Product Guide on How to Use and Combine
This is a guide covering the whole range of hair products for all mens hairstyles. The aim of this hair product guide is to give you the mens hair products that are catered for each of the hairstyles for men. Here in our online community Men's Hair Forum, we have a wide range of men hairstyles we have covered in great styling depth. However, what we want to achieve with this guide is to give you a sole guide where you can easily cross reference the product types (and recommendations) for any hairstyles or haircuts you may want to get.

The products that will be covered in this male hair product guide are:
  • Hair wax
  • Hair gel
  • Pomade
  • Styling cream
  • Mousse
  • Hair spray
  • Hair dryer
  • Hair straightener

You will find each product starts its own section with a centered title and then the suitable hairstyles for the product's use are listed as well as the actual product recommendations from our forum staff (and which have also generated positive feedback from forum members).

Hair wax

Hair wax is great for shaping your hair while getting a strong hold for any kind of elaborate hairstyles you have in mind. You can think of hair wax as giving the strong hold of hair gel but without the dry and harder look of gel, and hair wax is of great use for short haircuts for men where shaping of the hair with slick is required for maximum control. Furthermore, wax can give a natural look to your hair or give a more polished look, it depends on your chosen type of hair wax for men.

Other product names that fall under the term “wax” (in one way or another) include putty, hair fiber and hair clay (the actual additional benefit of the wax variant will be stated in the label of the product, if any).

Hairstyles that are good for hair wax use
  • Ivy League
  • Butch cut
  • Brush cut
  • High and tight
  • Regulation cut
  • Crew cut
  • Brush up
  • Caesar cut
  • Side part
  • Quiff
  • Pompadour
  • Undercut (and all its styling variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Metro mullet
  • Faux Hawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Mohawk
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair

Get this hair wax: this hair wax in the link is great for natural looks regardless of your hairstyle. It has a strong hold and can be used for shaping your hair. Perfect for messy hair and the brush up hairstyle.

Get this hair wax: this hair wax in the link has a more polished finish and is even better than the wax above for shaping your hair (the trade off is that it does not give a natural look). The hold is also strong and it has a good slick too. Perfect for a quiff, a faux hawk or a modern slicked back hair.

Hair gel

Hair gel is the kind of hair product for men that just about all guys know. Hair gel is a very convenient product as it offers a good hold, good definition, good shaping ability and gives a normal to dry look (not to be confused with dry hair).

Hairstyles that are good for hair gel use
  • Ivy League
  • Brush cut
  • High and Tight
  • Regulation cut
  • Spiky hair
  • Caesar cut
  • Quiff
  • Side part
  • Side fringe
  • Curtains
  • Brush up
  • Undercut (and all its styling variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Metro mullet
  • Faux Hawk
  • Mohawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Liberty Spikes
  • Natural curls (where hair is not styled and simply let to naturally settle on the head)
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair
  • Jheri curl
  • Long hair (this includes all tied styles such as the man bun style)
Hair gel products to buy (click each product link)

Get this hair gel: this hair gel in the link provides a strong hold that will be of great use for styles where you want your hair to be held up against gravity such as with the Brush up hairstyle, the faux hawk, quiff, Ivy League haircut, Mohawk or Liberty Spikes. It will give a dry matte look.

Get this hair gel: this hair gel in the link provides a low to medium hold so it is great for more natural hairstyles where you want some hold but also the hair to have movement. Hairstyles for which this hair gel in the link go very well include the modern slicked back, long hair, natural curls style and the messy hairstyle (aka “out of bed” look).

Pomade

Hair pomade is a product that aims to give the hair smoothness and slick. Pomade can be thought off as a more free-flowing hair wax, so pomade goes great for flat hairstyles (unlike wax, which goes better for “tall” styles) or for hairstyles where the hair needs movement. Depending on the pomade, you can also get good shine that will give further gloss to your tresses.

Hairstyles that are good for pomade use
  • Ivy League
  • Regulation cut
  • High and tight
  • Caesar cut
  • Quiff
  • Pompadour
  • Mop top
  • Side part
  • Side swept
  • Undercut (and all its slicked back and side swept variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Classic slicked back
  • Modern slicked back
  • Long hair (only for straight hair though)
Pomade products to buy (click each product link)

Get this hair pomade: this pomade in the link is great for flat hairstyles such as the side swept and modern slicked back. It also allows movement to the hair so you can use this pomade for long hair (only for straight hair) and for any short haircuts you have, in similar vein to hair wax. The hold of this pomade is strong, and the finish is a matte finish with some wet effect. This pomade is water based so it is much easier to wash off than regular pomades, which is a big plus in itself.

Get this hair pomade: this pomade in the link has a stronger hold than the pomade above, so this pomade is great for shaping a pompadour or a quiff as well as shaping any look you have in mind of the Rockabilly era. Furthermore this pomade goes great for a classic slicked back where you slick back your hair so that it remains fully flat and completely held in place. This pomade has some shine and is also easier to wash off than the regular pomades.

Styling cream

A styling cream (aka hairstyling cream or styling crème) is a product that provides sheen as well as a great shaping ability. A styling cream can be thought of as cross between a hair wax and a hair pomade, although not all styling creams are created equal (and we only recommend high-quality styling creams). A styling cream is also great for frizzy hair as well as all the hair types that fall under curly hair (i.e. wavy hair, coiled hair and kinky hair) as a good styling cream usually has a moisturizing property. Styling creams however, are not recommended for very short hair like with the types of buzz cuts or short military haircuts for men.

Hairstyles that are good for styling cream use
  • Ivy League
  • High and tight
  • Regulation cut
  • Brush up
  • Side part
  • Side fringe
  • Side swept
  • Mop top
  • Curtains
  • Quiff
  • Undercut (and all its styling variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Metro mullet
  • Faux Hawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair
  • Natural curls (where hair is not styled and simply let to naturally settle on the head)
  • Jheri Curl
  • Long hair (all hair types, including kinky curly hair aka afro textured hair)
  • Afro
Styling cream product to buy (click the product link)

Get this styling cream: this styling cream in the link is an excellent all-product. It is great for loose hairstyles where free-flowing hair is encouraged such as the curtains hairstyle, natural curls style, messy hair and long hair. It also has a good shaping ability so you can still shape short hairstyles such as the faux hawk hairstyle and blowout fade. Lastly, the linked styling cream is excellent for men with curly hair, and it will go very well with an afro hairstyle or a natural curly style where the waves of coils must be frizzy free and defined. If you want defined curly hair go with this styling cream!

Mousse

Hair mousse is a product that is dispensed as a foam to apply to the hair. Hair mousse has a good shaping property and also has a good hold. However, where its full power resides is in giving extra volume to hair (especially when in combination with a good hair dryer for men and when the right mousse is chosen) as well as in defining and enhancing wavy to coiled curly hair (similar to how styling creams define curly hair). Lastly, when a mousse is combined with a hair spray, a wet look can be achieved (use the mousse first, then the hair spray).

Hairstyles that are good for hair mousse use
  • Ivy League
  • High and tight
  • Regulation cut
  • Brush up
  • Spiky hair
  • Side part
  • Side fringe
  • Mop top
  • Curtains
  • Undercut (and all its styling variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Metro mullet
  • Faux Hawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair
  • Natural curls (where hair is not styled and simply let to naturally settle on the head)
  • Jheri Curl
  • Long hair (all curly hair types, so wavy, coiled and kinky hair)
  • Afro
Hair mousse product to buy (click the product link)

Get this hair mousse: this hair mousse in the link will work great to define and enhance wavy, coiled curly and kinky curly hair. Unlike a styling cream, however, this mousse will provide a drier and more natural looking texture to curly hair, so this mousse is a great option for those men with curly hair seeking a natural look for their waves and coils. Likewise, this hair mousse will provide more volume to your hair (regardless of your hair type) and especially when used with a good hair dryer, so if you would like more volume on your hair or if you have thin hair or are thinning, then this hair mousse plus a good hair dryer are you weapons of choice (see the hair dryer description further down in this guide).

Hair spray

Hair spray is a great product to secure your hair in the style or shape you have set your hair, so a hair spray can be regarded as an “extra” strong-hold product. However, the best hair sprays for men will also give the hair extra gloss and flexibility so that the hair doesn't look too hard or overdone. Furthermore, a hair spray can be used as a finishing product to any of the previous styling products covered above, with the hair spray being used only after styling the hair with whichever styling product you choose. Last but not least, hair spray can provide a wet look effect when used as a finishing product for a styling cream or hair mousse.

Hairstyles that are good for hair spray use
  • Spiky hair
  • Quiff
  • Pompadour
  • Side part
  • Side fringe
  • Curtains
  • Mop top
  • Brush up
  • Undercut (and all its messy variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Metro mullet
  • Faux Hawk
  • Mohawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Liberty Spikes
  • Natural curls (where hair is not styled and simply let to naturally settle on the head)
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair
  • Jheri curl
  • Long hair (all hair types)
Hair spray product to buy (click the product link)

Get this hair spray: this hair spray in the link is an excellent product to give and extra-strong hold to your hair while at the same time providing flexibility to the hair and further enhancing its gloss and shape. It also goes very well to set a wet look effect. Or, in other words, this hair spray in the link is the one to get!

Hair dryer

Hair dryers are excellent styling tools for men. While, traditionally, hair dryers have been used by women for many decades, men have also started to use hair dryers more and more over the last decade and for a very good reason! A hair dryer (aka blow dryer) will allow you to not only fully dry your hair faster in the morning or when in a rush but it will also allow you to achieve a lot of instant volume on your hair and enhance just about all medium length to long men hairstyles!

What's more is that a high quality hair dryer will provide gloss to your hair and remove frizz, meaning that your hair will look even better (and frizz free) than when using a regular hair dryer or when styling your hair without a hair dryer!

Hairstyles that are good for hair dryer use
  • Quiff
  • Side part
  • Side fringe
  • Curtains
  • Mop top
  • Brush up
  • Undercut (and all its messy and “big hair” variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Mohawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Liberty Spikes
  • Natural curls (where hair is not styled and simply let to naturally settle on the head)
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair
  • Long hair (all hair types)
Hair dryer product to buy (click the product link)

Get this hair dryer: this hair dryer in the link is a high quality hair dryer that will do everything that a good hair dryer does (as described) but even better! This hair dryer can be used to give your hair as much volume as you want and to also enhance your chosen hairstyle even more. Because of the latest industry technology used by this hair dryer, you will have glossier hair that is frizz free, something that regular and even “good” hair dryers cannot attain.

The hair dryer linked above is the perfect styling tool for any men and especially for those men who simply cannot get their best hairstyle despite all their efforts. Lastly it should be said that this hair dryer minimizes any damage to the hair, so this hair dryer can be used frequently (i.e. daily), which is something that regular hair dryers cannot do as they will fry and damage your hair with frequent use.

Hair straightener

A hair straightener (aka flat iron) is also another great hairstyling tool for men. A hair straightener will straighten curly hair (i.e. wavy hair, coiled hair and kinky hair) so that it temporarily looks and feels like straight hair. Likewise, a hair straightener can also be used on straight hair itself to create layers on the hair or to spice up the look of your hair ( straight hair that has been straightened with a straightener will have a different texture to naturally straight hair). The minimum length of hair to have to use a hair straightener is 2 inches (if your hair is shorter, wait until it reaches 2 inches to start using the straightener).

Hairstyles that are good for hair straightener use
  • Quiff
  • Side part (businessman style included)
  • Side swept
  • Side fringe
  • Mop top
  • Curtains
  • Brush up
  • Undercut (and all its medium length variations for the hair on the top of the head)
  • Faux hawk
  • Mohawk
  • Blowout fade
  • Liberty Spikes
  • Classic slicked back
  • Modern slicked back
  • Messy hair
  • Long hair
Hair straightener product to buy (click the product link)

Get this hair straightener: this hair straightener in the link is an excellent hair straightener for men. It will provide a great straightening finish that will go great with any of the hairstyles above and while minimizing any damage to the hair (like hair dryers, straighteners can damage the hair unless a high quality one like the one in the link is chosen). Furthermore, this high quality straightener will last you much longer than regular or even good hair straighteners as it is made in part of titanium!

RE: Mens Hairstyles and Hair Products – Official Product Guide on How to Use and Combine
Thanks for another awesome guide TMHF!
This guide will be very helpful especially for newbies as many times you can get confused with what does what for what & so on. I remember not knowing what styles would pomades and waxes suit me when i first joined & before reading The Mens Hair book. Thinking back then I think I just used a whole lotta hair gel for any hairstyles attempted with 99.99% of the time resulting in epic fails at getting the right product for the hairstyle I had in mind Big Grin
Another guide of the many already in the forum... you guys are building quite the epic collection huh Heart
