Man Braid Tutorial for Braiding your Manbuns and Topknots

After the mega ascent of the man bun hairstyle in 2013, another men's hairstyle is here to take its popularity crown in 2015: the manbraid hairstyle. With long hair still enjoying plenty of popularity among young urban males in most countries worldwide, the new hairstyle trend that is becoming more and more popular is to braid the long hair and tie it into different forms and shapes.

What is a manbraid?

The manbraid is nothing more than a braided tied hairstyle; this means that a manbraid encompasses the range of updo men's hairstyles like the ponytail, Samurai style, top knot, man bun and ponybun. However, usually the manbraid term is used to denoted a braided-bun hairstyle.

As with the man bun back in 2013, the manbraid gets its name from simply adding the “man” word so as to denote that the hairstyle is a braided one suited for “men”. The man bun got its name in this exact manner, as the proto-typical bun hairstyle has a favorite hairstyle of women around the world; thus adding the “man” word gives the hairstyle a more-masculine name, even though it's exactly the same thing: a manbraid is a braided hairstyle (being used for centuries by both men and women) and a man bun is a bun hairstyle (also used for centuries by both men and women).

Following from the above and in terms of hairstyle names, just as the man bun hairstyle is also known as a "mun", the man braid hairstyle is known as a "maid" (no I'm not kidding; this is our official man-braid guide, so the "maid" name stays!).

Before proceeding with this man braid hairstyle guide, let's first list the 9 different types of man-braid styles:
  • Braided man bun Undercut
  • Full braided man bun
  • Braided bun style
  • Single-lock man braid
  • Multiple-locks man braid
  • Manbraid cornrows
  • Braided ponytail
  • Braided Samurai hairstyle
  • Braided pig tails
See the next post below for the detailed explanations of each type of man braid hairstyle.

A guide to the different types of manbraid hairstyles for dudes with long hair.

The different types of manbraid styles

Braiding hair can get very creative, and, so long as you have long hair, you will then have the foundation to braid your hair into any style and shape.

Braided man bun Undercut:

The braided man bun Undercut is perhaps the trendiest manbraid hairstyle at the moment, and, to those of us in the men's hair industry, the braided man bun is possibly the most-suited hairstyle to be called a “textbook” manbraid.

The braided man bun is nothing more than a spin-off from the regular man bun Undercut style. As the name implies, this type of manbraid style has the hair on the sides and back of the head buzzed as an an Undercut haircut. What this means is that the hair on the sides and back of the head in a braided man bun Undercut is kept very short and/or buzzed. Ergo, the only long hair on the head is the hair on the top of the head.

In the braided man bun Undercut, the hair on the top of the head is braided as a plait (i.e. a French braid); that is, the hair is braided into a single braided that starts at the forehead's hairline (i.e. the forelock) and ends at the vertex (i.e. the back of the head's top). It's here in the vertex where the bun is placed, and the hair that makes the (man) bun is not braided.

Full braided man bun:

The full braided man bun hairstyle has the hair on the sides and back of the head long enough to be braided and tied into the bun. The minimum length for a full man bun is 8 inches of length, although in a full braided man bun, you will want (at least) 10 inches of hair length all across the scalp. This is due to the shortening effect that braiding one's hair had.

As with the manbraid Undercut hairstyle above, the actual braiding of the hair in the full braided manbun is a plait, although other types of braiding forms can be used.

Braided bun style:

The hair on the top of the head is not the only one to be braided but the hair making the bun is also braided. This is a great style for men who already have their hair braided and want to simply tie it into a man bun. A braided bun can be done with a full man bun or with a man bun Undercut.

Single-lock man braid:

A manbraid can also include a man bun that only has a single lock of hair braided. Braiding a single lock of hair can be done very fast, so it's a great way to rapidly spice up your manbun anytime and anywhere.

Multiple-locks man braid:

With this manbraid hairstyle, several locks of hair are braided instead of just one. Harry Styles from One Direction is notorious for having worn the multiple-locks man braid hairstyle and getting negative feedback from his fans.

You can also have all of the hair braided into several locks (see the next picture below) instead braiding all the hair into a single lock as per the popular plaited man-braid style that is so popular these days.

Manbraid cornrows:

Cornrows can also be used to style a man braid. Cornrows are braided locks of hair that are braided "on" the scalp, so they're not dangling. The only part of the braided cornrows hairstyle that is left to dangle is the back side of it, and this doesn't always happen. However, if the ends of the cornrow tracks are left dangling and not braided on the scalp, then the cornrows can be tied into a man bun or a manbraid-cornrows style.

Braided ponytail:

Let us not forget that not all man braid styles need to be "bun" styles. A classic braided men's hairstyle has always been the braided ponytail as a French braid or plait. However, considering how the man bun Undercut has been over the last 3 years, most guys with long hair have the hair on the sides and back of their heads buzzed, thus their braided ponytails are actual ponytail Undercuts.

Basically, it looks like this:

This man-braid ponytail style emulates the Ragnar Lothbrok hairstyle of Travis Fimmel in the TV series "Vikings".

Braided Samurai hairstyle:

A braided Samurai hairstyle is nothing more than a very-short (braided) ponytail. In the classic Samurai hairstyle, the short tail of head sticks out from the vertex area of the head and is only a couple of inches long; thus a Samurai hairstyle, whether braided or not braided, doesn't dangle and hang low and down unlike a textbook braided ponytail.

Braided pig tails:

Let's not forget about the eccentric hairstyles of Jared Leto when he had long hair and prior to chopping off his long mane in 2015 (only to repent 15 minutes later). Not too sure on whether we'd considered the braided pigtails hairstyle a manbraid, but, heck Jared Leto popularized the ponybun hairstyle so let's cut him some slack here, gentlemen.

If not, how about Snoop Dogg?

A detailed list of the best hair products for the man braid hairstyle.

Hair products for the man braid

As with the man bun and top knot hairstyles, the manbraid is a very minimalist hairstyle. All that is truly requires is an elastic hair band and either a styling cream or a leave-in conditioner. You can also add a headband to pull back the hair at the front that is still too short to be tied into the bun or you can use so-called Bobby pins to secure some of the hair i the braid or elsewhere on the scalp.

Here are the man braid products in more detail:
  • Elastic hair band: this is, by far, the most important hair product for your manbraid. We highly recommend that you buy a whole pack of elastic hair bands as it's very easy to loose them. See our men's hair accessories guide and browse down till the end of the second post for a list of our recommended hair bands as well as other recommended hair accessories.
  • Leave-in conditioner: this type of product is used to keep your hair glossy and better looking. A leave-in conditioner is like a regular conditioner and offers the same benefits as such, but a leave in conditioner isn't rinsed out (unlike a regular conditioner). Thus, you first coat your long hair with the leave-in conditioner and then proceed to style your man braid. A leave-in conditioner is, in fact, considered a hair-styling product for men, so you can use it for other long hairstyles of yours.

Make sure that you use the leave-in conditioner on damp hair (e.g. after showering and once you've towel-dried your hair). See our recommended leave-in conditioners for men to find a range of great leave-in conditioners with different price points that will suit any budget. I can tell you that having a leave-in conditioner handy when you have long hair will save you from many "bad-hair" days!
  • Styling cream: this type of product is similar in use to a leave-in conditioner, only that a styling cream provides a medium-to-high shine and it also has a decent hold for styling your hair (neither of these two properties are provided by leave-in conditioners). Like with the leave-in conditioner, you simply coat your long mane with the styling cream and then style your man braid.

Good styling creams will provide moisturizing properties like leave-in conditioners do, hence good styling creams aren't cheap products. However, we strongly recommend that you use a good styling cream for your long hair as you will be very-pleasantly surprised with the styling results that this type of product provides.

For a great styling cream, see our men's hair products guide and browse down to the section labeled as "best hair cream". That particular styling cream will do wonders for your long mane and for your man-braid styles (and for any other long men's hairstyles!). If the aforementioned styling cream is too expensive for you, then you can also get the styling cream that we've recommended in this list of products for Leonardo DiCaprio's hairstyles and which you will find recommended as the styling cream to use for his "curtains" hairstyle.
It's a good idea to own a leave-in conditioner and a styling cream so as to have a wider range of textures available for your manbraid. Likewise, both products go great with the rest of long hairstyles for men so you will be able to rapidly switch from a man braid to any other type of long hairstyle by using a styling cream or a leave-in conditioner.

Lastly, when it comes to the man braid hairstyle, avoid hair pomades, hair waxes and hair gels as they can mess your man braid. Stick to a styling cream and/or a leave-in conditioner and you will be good to go!

A set of pictures of manbraids and braided ponytails.
Here's another update with all kinds of manbraids. As you have been able to see in the previous pictures in this guide, the man braid hairstyle can be achieved on medium-length hair, although I recommend that you have at least 5 inches of hair length if you want to braid your hair.

If you want to transition from a medium-length manbraid to a topknot man braid, then bear in mind that you will need around 8 inches of hair length to be able to have enough hair length on the top to tie the bun (i.e. knot).

RE: ManBraid Hairstyle Guide: Advice, How to Style, Pictures, Products and More
Do you have any tips on how to braid my hair by myself? I have about 5-6 inches of hair, and I really like this hairstyle (from the previous post): s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/b4/cf/79/b4cf79087d2e74f07edf68dff652c311.jpg

Some tips on how the handle that amount of hair standing in the way while doing it. I've tried it like 15 times already, still no luck. Btw., my hair is already cut as an undercut, pretty much the same as on the photo.
