Thumbs Up Man Bun Beard Hairstyles Guide: Pictures, Advice, How To Style - Official Thread

Grow an epic beard with your man bun hair style!

The man bun is quite the versatile men's hairstyle: it goes well with the Undercut, fade, taper cut and it also goes well with a beard. As such and as is customary here at the Men's Hair Forum, let's turn the thread into the official thread on man bun beard hairstyles! Such an exceptional blend of scalp hair with facial hair should not go unnoticed and it's our duty to spread the word of how having enough hair in your head to hide a gun is both trendy and vanguardist.

How do you grow a beard with a man bun?

Let's first start by saying that both scalp hair and facial hair grow at about the same speed; that is, scalp hair and facial hair grow at about half an inch per month. Now, the hair length needed for a man bun is at least 6 inches, although we recommend a minimum hair length of 8 inches to avoid traction alopecia. On the other hand, you will only need 1 to 3 inches of beard length, which means that, were you to grow your scalp hair and facial hair at the same time, you will need to be trimming your beard every month or so as you wait for your hair to get to 8 inches of length.

You can grow your scalp hair and facial hair during different periods or one before the other; it doesn't matter. What matters is that you have at the very least 6 inches of scalp hair length and 1 inch of facial hair length. Otherwise there won't be any bearded man bun for you.

How to style the man bun and beard

We have documented all about the man bun in this forum. We have gone as far as to publish a complete man bun hairstyle guide and even a top knot hairstyle guide for those who like their buns smaller. We've recently started a thread on the man bun Undercut and you will find across the forum much more advice and pictures. If there's a dedicated place on the internet for the man bun, then that's this forum.

With regards to the beard style with your man bun, the facial hair styles should be somewhat shaggy as per the hyper popular hipster beard. While it will do you good to have good beard trimmer at hand to watch out for the homeless shaggy (beard style term for when things go wrong), you should still aim for a kind of messy beard style that would have your mother grabbing you by the ear and taking you to the barber to cut that disgusting mesh of facial hair that you've grown in your quest for man bun elitism. Just like with the manbun, we too have covered the hipster beard in detail so either check out the link above for the hipster beard or browse the forum for tons of pictures of it.

Pictures of the man bun beard styles

Well, here's the part that we've all been waiting for, the pictures. The man bun is a creative hairstyle so it can look quite unique depending on your hair type, hair length, hair color, hair texture, hair density, hair product use and much more. The same goes for your beard, there are too many variables going on which enable you to carve out your own look while still being within the confines of the bearded man bun.

I will post the hair products needed on the next post below as well as more style pictures. Anyway, enough with the writing. Picture time!

Hair products for the beard and man bun look and more hairstyling pictures to see.

Hair products for your man bun and beard:

The man bun with beard look is relatively low-cost. In fact, you can go all minimal with it and only buy a hair elastic for the look (i.e. to tie the hair). It's that minimal. In the name of hair care and aesthetics, however, you will do good with also getting a hairstyling cream, a leave-in conditioner and some beard oil. You may also want to look into a beard trimmer if you're not into the homeless shaggy beard style. Even the shaggiest of hipster beards will benefit from a beard trimmer.

Recommended hair products:
  • Get THIS set of elastics: the set of elastics in the link are cheap, durable and, just as important, they have no metal parts to destroy your bun. Consider buying a couple of sets as you will be losing your elastic hair bands at a speed that you never thought was possible (you've been warned!).
  • Get THIS hairstyling cream: a hairstyling cream is the go-to men's hair product for long hair and man bun hairstyles. The styling cream in the link will provide extra gloss, a natural finish and some slick that will make your locks smooth and easy to tie.
  • Get THIS leave-in conditioner: a leave-in conditioner is a must for long haired men. The great thing about a leave-in conditioner is that it no only makes your hair more malleable and glossier but it also acts as a de facto hairstyling product. You can alternate the leave-in with your hairstyling cream, use the leave-in before the hairstyling cream or simply use the leave-in as your daily hairstyling product. Either way, it's a great investment.
  • Get THIS beard oil: beard oil starts to become a necessity once you pass the half inch length mark. The beard oil in the link will make your facial hair smoother while keeping its natural look and manliness.
  • Get THIS beard trimmer: the beard trimmer in the link has a suctioning compartment so that all your trimmed beard is sucked into the trimmer and doesn't make a mess in your sink. It's also an all-around great trimmer and has a pretty affordable price.

More manbun and beard pictures:

You've already seen the first set of pictures and I assume that you have seen how a man bun with a beard can be customized to your unique preference. Overall, facial hair is quite customizable, so add in a bun to go with it and you have plenty of room to mold the look to your own taste. Simply keep in mind the minimum hair lengths for the man bun and the beard and the sky will be your styling limit!

RE: Man Bun Beard Hairstyles Guide: Pictures, Advice, How To Style - Official Thread
There are so many hairstyles to choose from out there. and they all look really good. This is why I'm trying to grow my hair right now and experiment with it because then I can always get it cut shorter if I want. The most I ever grew my hair was eight months and I thought that it took forever. You really need patience to grow hair like this and a beard like this too.

The man bun hairstyle and the top knot hairstyle require a lot of patience to grow!

Indeed. Take into account that the minimum hair length for a top knot is 6 inches of length, while the minimum hair length for a man bun is 8 inches of length. That equates to about a year to a year and a half if growing your man bun from a buzzcut haircut or from any other type of short haircut. Sure, a top knot undercut can look really cool when you see it in pictures like the ones in this same guide, but many guys jump onto the man-bun train without realizing that there is a long process to ensure before being able to tie a bun on your head.

I've seen very often how young guys start growing their hair to achieve a man bun, only to then give up a couple of months into their hair-growing efforts. This is very common with curly men as, once curly hair gets longer than 2 inches of length, it enters the feared awkward stage of male hair growth, which can last for a year (and even more!), and curly hair will only start to behave properly once the awkward stage of hair growth is over, which is usually once the length of the curly mane goes beyond 8 inches. Of course, it will also depend on the curly hair type of a given male, but many curly guys will find that their curls puff up and out as soon as they jump on their journey to grow a curly manbun.

The above is why it's so important to read about men's hair care in our forum (we have plenty of guides and resources for you guys), as using the right hair products for men can mean that you either finish your hair-growing journey successfully and achieve an epic man bun or cut your growing mane only 2 months after having started to grow it all out!

Lastly, the hipster beard (i.e. a full medium length to long length beard) will be achieved much faster than the length required for a man bun. So you will be stuck with a full long beard while still have many more months of growing your hair to be able to tie it into a man bun or top knot. While a hipster beard looks really good with a man bun, it may not look just as good with any other medium-length hairstyles that you're having to style as you patiently wait for your hair to reach at least 6 inches of hair length (which is the minimum length to classify men's hair as long).
