How to Style a Hair Bun for Men - Picture Guide Step by Step
Here is a guide with pictures on how to do a man bun hairstyle. Each step is shown with a picture so that you can visualize the process itself from wearing your hair loose (initial process) to tying the man bun (aka Samurai bun or Samurai hairstyle).

You may also consult our man bun hairstyle guide which also has a lot of pictures of man buns. We also have a hairstyle video on the man bun showing the actual process itself, so, with the man bun pictures below, you will have a full resource on our forum to style a manbun. For what is worth, the process below can be used for styling a ponybun or a regular ponytail. The minimum length required for a man bun is 6 inches, which is the starting length for the long hair classification of our hair length guide (which is taken from the bestseller The Men's Hair Book).

Hair is loose, not tied yet.

Grab all hair

Sweep all the hair towards the back to the vertex area (back of the top of the head). Make sure to also sweep all the hair on the back of the head so that you're holding it all in your hand as per the pictures below.

The hair being held is what we call the "tail" or "ponytail".

Tie the hair into a bun

Use your free hand (in this case, the right hand) to pass an elastic hair band over the tail.

The first lap of the hair band is used to recreate your hand holding the hair, then you pass the elastic band a second time, this time only passing a piece of the tail (about the first half of its length). This will immediately create a bun, which will likely look messy but which will be cleaned up in the next steps.

Since you only pass the hair band along the first half of the tail (when lapping the band for the second time), you will have the remaining half of the tail loose (i.e. not in the bun). This is what we call a ponybun as it's a half bun and half ponytail style.

Get the bun tight

Now, you grab a second elastic band and "choke" the messy bun that you've created in the previous step. This will allow you to tighten up your bun and hold it in place.

You can see in the picture below how the bun has been now choked tight and how there's still some tail loose below the bun (this is the second half of the tail's length that you didn't put in a bun).

Close the bun

What you now do is grab the remaining loose tail hair and wrap it around the bun by going around the bun until the length of the tail ends.

Tighten up the final bun

Once you have wrapped the loose tail around the bun, grab a third elastic band and choke the bun with the wrapped hair. This will ensure that the wrapped hair stays in place and blends into the bun.

This is what a final man bun looks like once you have used the third elastic band to choke the bun. Like a boss.

Hair accessories to use

For a man bun, all you need is a good set of elastic bands. Buy as many as you can because elastic bands are really easy to loose. Make sure that your elastic bands are metal free. Never buy hair bands with metal parts in them because that's a sure way to damage your hair.

You may also get a headband if the hair on the front of your head is too short to be put in the bun. Simply use the headband to pull back the hair on the front of your head.
