RE: Best Hair Products for Men - Epic List
My turn:
For normal shampoo/conditioner, Pureology line (comes as pack). Expensive but least damaging of all to my fine hair
For dandruff shampoo, Stiprox (brand Stiefel) and Regenepure. They work different so I rotate them in winter when dandruff gets bad
Hair thickener shampoo, lemon sage (brand P.mitchell)
I cant remember other names as I'm on holiday and didnt take it all

Done and done people. Updated the best hair products list with the combs. I think the list seals all hair products for men in terms of the categories but feel free to suggest more hair products that you have loved or found to work great.

I use this hair wax I got at walmart called "Bed head for men"
It's a pretty weird name but it works, and if I go to bed with it on, I get a cool hairstyle when I wake up.
And I just use a cheap run of the mill black comb.

RE: Best Hair Products for Men - Epic List
I just did my Christmas shopping with the products in the list Big Grin Got-
* pureology shampoo and conditioner
* gatsby hair wax
* suavecito pomade
* moroccanoil styling cream
* rusk speed hair dryer

most of the products are just repeat purchases as they have worked pretty well for me + the vendors from the links in the list are pretty good too

(06-25-2013 03:45 PM)TheMensHairForum Wrote:  This is an epic thread on the best hair products for men on the market. Include specific mens hair products, hair loss products, natural hair products and other hair care products. Mention brands and other product details and throw in your experience with it too. Rate the hair product experience if you want.

The mens hair products categories to include the specific products are below, more than one product can go in each category so feel free to suggest your one without considering what's already there. You can also mention those hair products that have been awful or haven't worked to their advertised claims, or those that were average or OK.

Only forum members with more than 20 posts are allowed to post their preferred mens hair products so we make this list reliable and trustworthy.

Best shampoo

The shampoos listed below can be used if your hair doesn't suffer from a specific condition or if you want an overall shampoo that does what it is supposed to do: clean your hair. You should follow your shampoo with a conditioner at least three times per week (apply the conditioner to your hair after having rinsed the regular shampoo). You can find our recommended conditioners listed further down in this list).

Get any of the 2 shampoos for a good product to clean your hair:

Pureology shampoo with conditioning effect

American Crew Moisturizing shampoo

Best dandruff shampoo

Anti-dandruff shampoos are effective for the treatment of dandruff in men. Anti-dandruff shampoos carry one or more active ingredients in their formula. As with all shampoo types, you should follow your anti-dandruff shampoo with a conditioner.

Please be aware that, while anti-dandruff shampoos will help in taming any dandruff issues you may have, they do not cure dandruff; in fact, there is no real cure for dandruff, though it can be managed effectively with anti-dandruff shampoos.

If you have dandruff and are looking for a shampoo that will fight this insightful problem, then buy any of the following anti-dandruff shampoos:

Tea tree oil shampoo (with tea tree oil conditioner included too for an extra dandruff solution)

Neutrogena dandruff shampoo

Head and Shoulders

Best hair thickening shampoo

Thickening shampoos temporarily swell the structure (i.e. shaft) of the hair strands while depositing a fine layer of proprietary ingredients along the length of the strands. This peculiar mechanism of action of thickening shampoos yields a visual thickening of the hair strands, thus enhancing the overall volume and look of the hair after using a thickening shampoo.

If your hair is thinning or your hair doesn't have as much volume as you would like it to have, then buy any of the following thickening shampoos:

Paul Mitchell Lemon Sage thickening shampoo (comes with thickening conditioner too for better results)

Best conditioner

Regular conditioners are applied and left on the hair for one to three minutes right after rinsing the shampoo from your hair; once the one to three minutes are over (specific time will vary among brands), you then rinse the conditioner from the hair. You should use a regular conditioner at least 2 times per week but ideally every time you shampoo.

Regular conditioners can also be found labelled as “normal conditioners”, “daily conditioners” or “rinse-out conditioners”. Buy any of the following regular conditioners from Amazon:

Pureology conditioner (a bit expensive but very much worth the price since it also comes as a 33-oz product - For the record, 33 ounces equates 1 liter). If your hair product budget is lower, then get the Agadir conditioner below)

Agadir Argan Oil Daily Moisturizing Conditioner

Best leave-in conditioner

Leave-in conditioners offer the same features as regular conditioners (i.e. glossy, moisturized hair that is easier to manage) although the main difference between the two is that leave-in conditioners are left on the hair and not rinsed. Leave-in conditioners are particularly useful for men with wavy hair, coiled/curly hair and kinky hair, and leave-in conditioners can be used as de-facto hairstyling products too.

It is a good idea to own both a regular conditioner and a leave-in conditioner: you use the regular conditioner after the shampoo, then rinse the regular conditioner, dry your hair so it feels damp, then use the leave-in conditioner and after the leave-in conditioner you use any hairstyling products you want.

Get the following leave-in conditioner from Amazon:

Bumble and Bumble leave-in conditioner

Best hair gel

Hair gel is an excellent styling product to mold and give shape to your hair. Hair gels can be used with just about any mens hairstyle so as to customize the look of your hair. Make sure your hair is damp before starting to style with the gel.

Get any of the following hair gels:

KMS unisex hair gel

Short Sexy Hair gel

Best hair wax

Hair wax provides ample hold and molding of the hair; hair wax is an excellent choice for men who look to shape their hair while defining it. Hair wax also provides gloss to the hair and will make the hair sleeker without making it greasy. Hair wax is great for gravity-defying hairstyles. A good example of a male hairstyle where wax has been used to shape the style is the Brush up hair of Zayn Malik where a Quiff and styled up hair are combined to give a casual trendy hairstyle (either of the two waxes recommended in the links below will work great for Brush up hairstyles and other casual or shaped male hair styles).

Hair wax is of most use for straight and wavy hair that is either short or of a medium length.

Buy any of the following hair waxes from Amazon:

Gatsby hair wax (for a more shaped hairstyle with good volume and a matte effect)

TIGI Bed Head hair wax (for a more natural-looking or casual hairstyle that still needs shaping)

Best pomade

Hair pomade is an excellent hairstyling product to get sleek hair that is defined and shiny. Hair pomade suits hairstyles that require either slicking (back/side) or having the hair loose. Hair pomade will also define your hair and can also give some good natural hold to your hair.

Hair pomade suits all hair types as well as short and medium length hair. Grab any of the following hair pomades from Amazon:

Malin + Goetz

Suavecito pomade

Masters Organic hair pomade

Best hair mousse

Hair mousse is a hairstyling product that is dispensed as foam, thus creating a mousse-like texture prior to its application to the hair. Hair mousse is an excellent hairstyling product to define wavy, coiled, curly and kinky hair, and hair mousse also provides some holding of the hair in place so as to shape a hairstyle.

All hair types and hair lengths benefit from hair mousse although all the curly hair types (wavy, coiled and kinky) as well as long hair benefit greatly from hair mousses. Hair mousse can also be used with hair spray to provide the ultimate "wet look" (apply the hair mousse first, then spray the hair).

Get the following hair mousse from Amazon:

Agadir Argan Oil Volumizing Styling Mousse

Best hair cream or styling cream

Styling creams are great at taming frizz and flyaway hairs while providing great definition to the hair. Styling creams are great to weight down the hair and have the hair hanging down at lengths in which it naturally doesn't hang down.

Styling creams can be used on all hair types and hair lengths although styling creams are of the greatest use for curly hair (i.e. wavy, coil shaped and kinky hair) as well as for long hair.

The following hair styling cream from Amazon will be a good purchase:

Moroccan Oil hydrating styling cream

Best hair spray

Hair spray provides the finishing touches to a hairstyle; hair spray "locks" the hairstyle in that the hair spray will hold the hair in place tightly.

Hair spray should be sprayed from about one foot away, and hair spray can be used after applying hair mousse to create a "wet look".

Hair spray is useful for all hair types and hair lengths. To use hair spray, use first any of the other hairstyling products in the rest of this guide and then use the hair spray to secure and tighten up your hairstyle.

Buy the following hair spray from Amazon:

TIGI bed head hair spray

Best natural hair product

For those men who would like to use natural products to condition their hair, both coconut butter and shea butter are excellent choices to apply to your hair when damp. You will need to play a bit with the amount you need for you hair, but it won't take you long to know how much exactly your hair need.

You can also use any of the 2 products below with other styling products, but in the case of doing such a combination, only apply the coconut butter/shea butter to the tips of the hair.

Artisana 100% Organic Raw Coconut Butter

Organic unrefined shea butter

Best hair straightener

Hair straighteners allow for the straightening of hair in a convenient manner. Hair straighteners work by delivering heat to the hair strands so as to alter the hair strands' structure.

The straightening effect of hair straighteners is temporary; once you wet the hair again, the hair will go back to its natural hair shape. Hair straighteners are not only great for straightening hair but also for creating layers on the hair, thus hair straighteners open a new door of hairstyles for a male.

Hair straighteners suit all hair types and hair lengths although hair straighteners work their best on medium to long-length hair (i.e. hair that is longer than two inches in length). You should apply a heat-protecting product (aka heat protectant, see next product) to your hair prior to using a hair straightener so as to minimize any damage to the hair inflicted by the high heat of the hair straightener.

Get the following high-quality hair straightener from Amazon:

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium 1

Best heat protecting product (for the hair straightener)

Heat protectants (aka heat protecting products) are products that are applied to the hair prior to using hair straighteners. Heat protectants minimize the damage inflicted by long-term heat exposure derived from the use of hair straighteners. Ideally, you should be using a heat protectant any time that you are going to straighten your hair although I would make it a must if you want to keep your hair damage-free for the long term.

Tresemme Tresemme Thermal Creations

Best hair dryer

Hair dryers (aka blow dryers) are useful to you for drying your hair faster, to achieve more defined and faster hairstyles and to also give some big volume to your hair any day of the week, whenever you want. Hair dryers should not be used daily; the maximum frequency of use for hair dryers is every other day (i.e. one day "on", one day "off", one day "on", one day "off", and so on). Sometimes, a hair dryer will be called a blow dryer, yet both terms mean the same.

You can use a hair dryer with any hairstyling product you want and you should also buy a diffuser with the hair dryer (if available) as the diffuser helps spread out the hot air from the hair dryer which then helps you to avoid burning or damaging your hair.

Generally a hair dryer will be one of the most expensive items in your shopping basket but this is because with hair dryers, price tends to reflect the quality of the hair dryer. A high quality hair dryer as you will find below is one that will last you much longer than any cheap or regular/generic hair dryer.

Get any of the following high quality hair dryers:

Rusk Speed Freak hair dryer

T3 Featherweight Luxe Ion Generator hair dryer

Conair 225NP hair dryer

Best hair clippers (cordless, corded, set or single piece)

Hair clippers allow for the buzzing of the hair very short. Typically, a hair clipper will allow for the buzzing (i.e. clipping) of the hair from a near-shaved length all the way up to half an inch.

As a male, having a hair clipper at home will go a long way in opening a new door of hairstyles to you. Furthermore, being able to buzz your hair will also save you plenty of money by reducing your number of barbershop visits as mastering your use of the hair clipper is easy. We highly recommend you to own a high quality hair clipper despite the prices running for a high quality hair clipper are in the 00s. Cheap hair clippers will break very fast and will overheat every time you use them so a high quality hair clipper is truly worth the investment.

For a man, the hair clipper is one of the most valued tools when it comes to grooming as it allows one to create all kinds of haircuts and save a lot of money in the long term. The two hair clippers recommended below are the best clippers you could get for their price and they are very much worth their investment:

Andis Super BGR+ Cordless Rechargeable Clipper + full guard range + toolkit with protective case (cordless, it is listed as the BGRC model in the Amazon page but only because the distributor also carries the BGRC model and Amazon only allowed one title listing. The hair clipper in this link is the official Andis BGR+ cordless model and it comes with the whole tool kit)

Oster Classic 76 Professional Hair Clipper (with cord) (also get this set of 10 guiding combs as an accessory for this hair clipper)

Best hair loss products

Hair loss products work to slow down, stop or even regrow hair. However, there's no cure to male pattern baldness (the most common form of male balding), so you need to take any of the following products for the long term.

We recommend you to weigh the pros and cons, with the "con"being the cost of it in the long term, although we always make sure that we list the cheapest and most valuable sources for hair loss products. For example, the Rogaine that we have selected below has a great price when worked out per month and is certainly much cheaper than at high-street retail stores.

Rogaine 6 month supply

Kirkland minoxidil 12 month supply

Nizoral shampoo

Best combs

Combs are essential hairstyling tools for men as they allow for the effective shaping of most hairstyles. There are four types of combs available: regular combs, hair bushes, wide-tooth combs and hair picks.

Regular comb

Regular combs are a must-have for men with straight hair who seek the sweeping and shaping of their hair into different hairstyles. Regular combs should only be used by men with straight hair; men with wavy, coiled, curly or kinky hair should use a wide-tooth comb instead for the styling of their hair. Get any of these two from Amazon:

Kent hand made large comb (regular comb)

Kent Hand-Made medium size with handle (regular comb, comes with handle)

Wide tooth comb

Wide-tooth combs have wide gaps between the comb's teeth, which allows for the effective combing of all the types of curly hair (i.e. wavy, coiled and kinky). Wide-tooth combs also serve for detangling any matted or knotted hair. Get the following wide tooth comb from Amazon:

Wide tooth comb made of sandalwood (wide tooth comb)

Best hair books for men

Other than reading our forum, you only need one more reading source, and that's either The Men's Hair Book or The Curly Hair Book. These 2 books are written by bestselling author and men's hair guru Rogelio, and they are must-haves when it comes to putting everything together and making the most of your hair.

The difference between The Men's Hair Book and The Curly Hair Book is that The Men's Hair Book is a complete system to all about your hair and going into lots of detail, we regards this book as the encyclopedia of men's hair and it's a great reference for whenever you ahve doubts. On the other hand The Curly Hair Book still provides a system and blueprint to men's hair but the book is mainly geared towards men with wavy, coiled curly and kinky curly hair. The Curly Hair Book also has more of a personal touch from Rogelio as it was his first book and he has curly hair too.

In this forum, we use several of the methods pioneered by Rogelio such as his hair type guide. All you need is either of those 2 books and reading/asking questions in this forum and you will get the hair that you wish for Smile

The Curly Hair Book: Or How Men Can Now Rock Their Waves, Coils And Kinks

The Men's Hair Book: A Male's Guide To Hair Care, Hair Styles, Hair Grooming, Hair Products and Rocking It All Without The Baloney

The list will be periodically updated to include the different hair products for men that have been suggested. The best deals on each of the products will be sought online, including Amazon, so the list will allow everyone to buy the best hair products they can get their hands on at the most competitive prices.

You don't need to state all products that have worked for you in one go, update as you feel like etc

Go!

EDIT: I'm updating products in this post as we discuss and recommend the best products. This thread will have more and more products so bookmark it as your reference for men's hair products!

TIGI Bed Head, it's in the first post. I switched from fiber to this and it is a huge improvement. The hold is better, the smell is better, and you can play around with your hair more.

Javon, define "bad" (and I am not picking on you Smile, I'm picking on the people peddling those "everything free" shampoos that cost a fortune). They will come with all kind of excuses including that "sulfates" in shampoos cause cancer LOL

The best shampoo is your fingers and the best conditioner is your own sebum. Then add anything you need according to the hair products you use. Those shampoos you describe are part of a "system" for women that is very expensive and very high maintenance.

Sulfates are there to clean the hair and we men secrete a lot of sebum that is very hard to remove if it is not spread right so sulfates are needed. I recommend you to pick up The Curly Hair Book (is there in the products list of this thread) and read his simple system. About silicones, well, almost everybody benefits from silicones and if you are using a sulfate shampoo you will be fine. If you still want to go ahead and get a silicone free conditioner, then get this one from Amazon as it has a good price and you can buy it with another conditioner that does have silicones (like the one in the link below) and then test and see which one gives you the best results.

We are planning on putting a guide on shampoos to talk more of all the shampoos but for now don't worry too much and grab the moisturizing shampoo from the list and the conditioner from the list (plus the book). Shampoo only once every two days for now (you will read all about that in the book) and use the conditioner after the shampoo. On the days you don't shampoo, just run your fingers through your hair from the scalp to the end of the curls (you do this to spread the sebum that is secreted daily) and also use a leave in conditioner after you dry your hair.

Damn am going to have to ping Rogelio so he browses the forum more often LOL his the one who invented the system and knows all the ins and outs of it but what I just described above is a very small summary of what it is really. You only need to see his curly hair to see proof that it works like a charm and it only takes a couple minutes to groom your curls like that too.

We are always researching in Amazon to find the best prices so we try to keep this list updated with all the lowest prices and the best Amazon distributors who are selling the products (each link leads to the product's page of the Amazon distributor). So you will be getting some of the best deals through this list itself Cool

RE: Best Hair Products for Men - Epic List
Haha, thanks for the reply -- very helpful. Bad is a terrible word -- by bad, I mean that it takes away from the overall results of the curls? I honestly don't know, I just read that curly-haired folks should stay away from shampoos and conditioners containing silicone and/or sulfate. As of now, I've been cowashing, because of what I heard about sulfate and the results are stunning. I have conditioner in my head as we speak and I'm going to rinse with cold water (45 minutes). What are your thoughts on co-washing? Also, say that we run out of leave-in conditioner -- could we use regular conditioner to substitute for the leave-in? Thanks!

Edit: I really want to buy this book now, but I need some money lol (college student).
